Graveyard Keeper 2 Beginner Guide: Your First Two Hours
The opening is not about digging graves, it is about surviving and earning your title. A step-by-step first-session route from the demo, plus the real bottlenecks.

Here is the short version: your first job in Graveyard Keeper 2 is not to dig graves. You survive first, then you earn a title.
You wake up chained in the Inquisitor headquarters dungeon. A fairy called Soul snaps one chain. A talking skull called Larry tells you the two of you have been roommates for nearly a decade.
Once you are out, a guard spots the Inquisitor’s medallion in your bag, assumes you are the new Grand Inquisitor, and sends you to the workshop for armour and a sword. Then comes your first zombie defence.
In the demo, the first four hours are basically that chain. Running the graveyard properly comes later.
The first ten minutes
This order comes from recorded demo footage. Two separate recordings agree on it, so it is not guesswork.
- The fairy shows up. She says “It took you 8 years to ruin this world. Now it’s your destiny to save it” and breaks one chain. She cannot break the second, because “There’s simply not enough faith left in the world”. She tells you to struggle free and summon her again as soon as you can.
- You meet Larry. The skull introduces himself, mentions the decade as roommates, and calls the dungeon “a five-star Inquisitor dungeon where torturing is maintained at an exquisite standard”.
- You leave the dungeon and cross the infected district. A survivor guides you, telling you to demolish a house to clear the way before leading you back to safety.
- A guard stops you. He searches your bag and finds “an ugly skull, a royal signate, and an Inquisitor’s medallion”. His verdict: “Maybe you actually are an Inquisitor. Either way, you can hold a weapon.” He tells you to get armour and a sword from the workshop.
- Your first defence battle. Once you have the gear, the first town defence begins. It plays as a tutorial.
- Back to camp, gathering and building. Chop wood, gather stone, unlock your first technologies, build a workbench, then sleep to end day one.
Three terms worth learning now
These come up constantly. Understanding them early saves a lot of wandering.
Grand Inquisitor. That is your role in this world. The sequel’s protagonist is not the Keeper who ran a graveyard outside the village in the first game. It is the other half of that soul, the half sent into the Town. For the relationship between the two games see the comparison page, and for the full story see the story explainer.
The three resource points. The game states outright that blue means “Blue is faith and graveyard”, so blue is tied to faith and your cemetery. The idea that red leans physical and green leans natural comes from player testing, not from in-game text.
One change matters here: blue points are no longer scarce in the sequel. So the hard part is no longer hoarding points, it is picking a direction.
The seven-day cycle. Each day is named after a sin, in the order Pride, Envy, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Wrath. On Wrath Day you can hold a sermon, and sermons generate faith income.
First-session route
Follow this order and each step sets up the next.
| Step | Do this | Why here | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Escape and follow the guide back to safety | No title means no usable workbench | Basic movement and interaction unlocked |
| 2 | Talk to the guard, get armour and sword from the workshop | Combat has a protection gate, no gear means no fight | You can enter the first defence |
| 3 | Fight the first defence | Tutorial battle, and it introduces the Town districts | First combat rewards |
| 4 | Back at camp, chop wood and gather stone | Every build starts with these two | Materials for a workbench |
| 5 | Open the tech tree and unlock only what you can build right now | Avoid unlocking recipes you cannot make | Workbench and basic crafting online |
| 6 | Process your first body and extend the graveyard | Graveyard quality feeds faith income | Faith starts accumulating |
| 7 | Sleep | Advances the date and settles production | Day two begins |
The three places people get stuck
Players and reviewers only report three categories of problem. Knowing they exist stops you thinking you broke the game.
One: too many steps, easy to lose track. Several reviews flag the same thing, that almost everything takes two or three prerequisite layers. Shacknews wrote “Everything you do is a weirdly multi-tier process”, and DualShockers called the onboarding “fairly obtuse in terms of explaining things or quality of life”.
What to do: chase one goal at a time. Write down its prerequisites instead of pushing three or four chains at once.
Two: a recipe unlocks but cannot be crafted. Some tech tree entries unlock before the required building or material is available.
What to do: before unlocking, confirm you already have the building and the ingredients.
Three: quests are not organised, so you wander. The sequel adds a quest flowchart that links active side quests by their story reason. It does not prioritise them for you.
What to do: check the flowchart once a day and confirm which quests are actually active.
How to tell you are still on track
Three self-checks. If any one fails, you are stuck.
- Are there active side quests in the quest flowchart? If it is empty, you need to explore or talk to an NPC.
- For the next recipe you want, do you already have the building and the materials?
- Did resources settle properly after sleeping? Unchanged output usually means a broken production step. The automation page has a longer troubleshooting list.
Version boundary
This route is based on the free demo from 14 September 2026. The full release may adjust numbers and ordering.
There is no official strategy guide, so the order here comes from recorded gameplay and the parts reviewers agree on.
