Graveyard Keeper Story and Endings Explained
The original ends with the portal bringing the Keeper his lover instead of sending him home. Full story, ending counts per version, and how it links to the sequel.

Spoilers below.
The one-line version: the original Graveyard Keeper is a story about getting what you need rather than what you asked for.
The protagonist is hit by a car and wakes in a medieval fantasy world, assigned to tend the graveyard beside the church. He helps the villagers, and collects the magic items needed to open a portal.
The portal does not send him home. It brings his lover to him instead.
The DLC content goes further and reveals why: the Ancient God brought him there and split his soul in two. The aggressive half was sent into the Town, and that half is the protagonist of Graveyard Keeper 2.
How the story starts
The protagonist is an ordinary man, hit by a car and dropped into a medieval fantasy world with the job of keeping the village graveyard. Wikipedia summarises it as: “It follows an ordinary man who was transported to another world with a medieval-fantasy setting and assumes the task of tending for the village’s graveyard while looking for a way back home.”
The graveyard starts derelict. Boulders, stumps and weeds cover the plots. Clearing, burying, running the church and collecting donations is the loop for the first several dozen hours.
How the main story moves
The method is simple: solve problems for NPCs, get information and items in return.
The Keeper later learns of a portal that grants any wish, but it needs several special magic items. Those items sit with the village’s most influential characters.
The spine of the main story is six major NPC quest lines.
A long-standing community reading holds that each in-game day is named after a sin, with the six working days mapping to six sins and six related characters. The seventh sin, Greed, has no day, and the theory is that the Keeper himself is Greed.
Worth stating plainly: that reading comes from player analysis. The developers have never confirmed it.
What actually happens at the end
Once the prerequisites are met, the Keeper activates the portal and wishes to be reunited with his loved one.
The result is not that he returns home. It is that his lover is brought to his world.
Wikipedia’s wording: “instead of returning him home, the portal brings his lover to his side instead.”
Player explanations line up: “the ‘portal’ is not really a portal, but it’s a device than grant you your true wish, and our poor keeper ask ‘to be together with his loved one’ instead of ‘returning to his real world’”.
The portal grants the true wish, not the literal request.
How many endings are there
This has to be answered per version, because there is no official total.
| Content | Endings | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | 1 main ending | The portal opens and the lover arrives |
Stranger Sins (2019) | Adds a new ending on top of the main one | Only visible if you finish the expansion’s quest line before completing the main story |
Game of Crone (2020) | Three endings of its own | All three are cliffhangers and they are mutually exclusive, so seeing them all takes multiple playthroughs or save scumming |
Better Save Soul (2021) | No new main ending | Mostly a systems expansion about sins on corpses |
So “how many endings does Graveyard Keeper have” has no universal answer. You cannot see every version in one playthrough.
What each DLC covers
Breaking Dead: adds a resurrection table and zombie labourers, automating the supply chain. This system became the sequel’s core mechanic.Stranger Sins: adds a runnable tavern, gives previously silent villagers personalities, and adds a new ending. The heaviest story payload.Game of Crone: adds a refugee camp from the Inquisition, a vampire mystery, a side quest about the donkey planning a revolution, and fills in the prehistory of the Great Blast.Better Save Soul: work with Euric and the amnesiac half-ghost Smiler to remove sins from corpses, and adds new ways to improve corpse quality.

How this connects to Graveyard Keeper 2
The original’s DLC ending reveals that the Ancient God split the Keeper’s soul in two.
The aggressive half was sent into the Town. The compassionate half had its memory wiped and stayed behind as the graveyard keeper. That also explains why the original protagonist gets struck by lightning whenever he tries to enter the Town.
The sequel’s protagonist is the half sent into the Town.
The developers told returning players directly on 2 September 2026: “Those of you who played the Stranger Sins DLC may already have the right idea.”
Full comparison is on the sequel vs original page.
Two common questions
What happens if you keep throwing bodies in the river? The official Graveyard Keeper Wiki concludes there are no known negative consequences: “There are no known negative consequences if you do so”.
A Steam discussion answer reads: “There are no consequences. Gerry will say dumped river bodies wash up in the game’s town, but there is no town”.
That said, the community recommends cremation instead, because it yields resources and a burial certificate.
Does the original have romance? There is gift-based relationship building, and players do describe it as dating-sim flavoured, but it is not a full romance line in the Stardew Valley sense.
The sequel’s reviews make the contrast explicit, noting that the original’s “dating sim and relationship building” elements were largely replaced by horror-tinged side quests.
